Jerry was right


 Already there have been traveling issues on our Spain/Ireland adventure. Our flight to Dublin was supposed to leave OHare at 8:55 pm. and arrive in Dublin at 10:30 am. Then we were to leave Dublin for Bilbao at 12:15 pm, arriving in Bilbao at 3:15 pm. At 2 pm we received an email from our new least favorite airline saying the flight was delayed and now would be leaving at 21:00 and please call to see if you need to rebook your connecting flight. Being an English major and not understanding that we were not in any danger of missing our connecting flight, I panicked and called. The helpful agent said of course you are going to miss your connection but I can get you on another flight leaving Dublin at 5:30 and arriving in Bilbao at 8:45. Without consulting Nick, who actually understands what time 21:00 is, I agreed. I realized my mistake almost immediately and resolved to get to the airport early to change the flights back. Alas, that is not possible. Apparently all this podunk airline does at the airport is check you in and weigh your luggage. I said, at least get us TSA pre-check so we get through security quicker. No, sorry, we do not offer that here at this airline - our systems are too old. So in addition to looking forward to an extra 5 hours in the Dublin airport, we got to remove our shoes and liquids and spend an inordinate amount of time getting through grumpy Chicago security. Ok enough complaining. We had a lovely meal at HUB restaurant and now await our flight to Dublin.

 As Nick and I prepare to embark on an adventure in Spain and Ireland, I’ve decided to create a new blog. Whether photos will be possible is iffy as it requires transferring the photos to Google, and only Julie is good at that.  First on the program is a trip to Bilbao, Spain, home of a famous Guggenheim Museum, tapas (called pinxtos) and Basque culture. We were delighted to discover that the 2023 Tour de France started in Bilbao. (Also delighted that the Dutch team won it this year.) We have several tours pre-booked and hope to add other adventures.  Next Tuesday we fly to Dublin and on Friday night will celebrate the wedding of the intrepid Ciara and Jack. We very much look forward to seeing our Irish family especially Seamie who is about 9 months old now. On to Saint-Emilion

 We left Bordeaux on our coach at 9:45 am. Nick had managed to pack Sue’s and his carry-ons into his one big suitcase. At least managing one huge bag is easier than balancing a small one on top of it. As we drove toward Saint-Emilion, Maria gave us an idea of our day, which consists of a wine tour, lunch and scenic walk at Chateau de Pressac and then a short drive to our next hotel near Saint-Emilion. We then heard remarks from Donal concerning the first weekend’s matches. It was very interesting to hear his take. He was not shy about criticizing the referee in the Wales Fiji game. He thought the fact that Johnny Sexton, Ireland’s 38-year old captain, played so well was a very good sign. He fielded questions about what the next game against Tonga may entail.  Maria gave us some info about Saint-Emilion, a medieval village named for a monk who performed a miracle here. Last full day in Paris

  It was a bit rough making our 9:15 am meeting time to head to Musee D’Orsay for our 10 am reservation. Mary and Julie have developed cold and flu symptoms, and Sue had trouble sleeping. We headed out to take the Metro to the museum and found a bit of a chillier day than we have been experiencing. The metro stop was steps away from our hotel but on the other end, we had quite a hike to the museum. Having walked over ten miles yesterday, it was a little hard on the feet. We only had a short wait until we could enter the museum. It is in an old train station and the building itself is quite striking. There was a long gallery with sculptures and then side galleries with many impressionists and other masters. There were loads of beautiful Monets, Van Goghs, including an earlier version of Starry Night, Renoirs and many more.
